Huelskamp Supports Disaster Aid Package for Drought Relief
(WASHINGTON) – On Thursday afternoon, the U.S. House of Representatives passed HR 6233, the Supplemental Agricultural Disaster Assistance. The legislation provides drought relief to farmers and ranchers by restarting programs authorized in the 2008 Farm Bill but that expired in September 2011. Such programs primarily include assistance to livestock producers, and are paid for by budget reductions in other areas. House Agriculture Committee member Tim Huelskamp of Kansas voted for the bill and released the following statement explaining his vote:
“I supported the disaster aid package because the bill reprogrammed dollars rather than spend new money. Even in emergencies like the drought we are experiencing now, Congress still has an obligation to be responsible and prioritize its spending. I am glad we are able to provide some fiscally-sound relief for our livestock producers. For the sake of farms and ranches suffering from the drought, let us hope the Senate wastes no time in considering this legislation.”
